A Prize In Every Box

This is a place for the random musings and life experiences of one Fliven, who looks for life's fun little surprises, even when its in a giant box of stale, tasteless foodstuffs.

Of Cars and Houses

Man, its been awhile since I've blogged, but I have been a busy little bee the past few months, and just now have the time.

Firstly, house! Started looking for a house in January. Looked at a few options in the area, and in March, put an offer in on a short sale. For those who are not 'real estate savvy', a short sale is a sale by someone who is in the early stages of foreclosure, so as to avoid having a foreclosure on their record. But its got to go through a whole thing by the bank, and is a real pain. So. While waiting on that, we kept looking around. Then found THE house. We put an offer in on that one, had a little haggling with the seller, and then signed a contract on April 29th...one day before the tax credit deadline. Booyeah! What followed is a dark time with financial stress you would not BELIEVE, but on June 25th we closed on the house and started moving in! Its awesome. I have a YARD. And when I get rid of some of the trees out back, I'll have a view, too. I don't mind the trees, really, and like trees, and speak for the trees, but these are pine, which are not cool. Deciduous is better. Pines drop cones or needles or sap or pollen all four seasons of the year, and kill grass. So they've got to go. There IS one nice tree back there that I want to keep, however. We're about 90% moved in now, with just a few organized piles of stuff in the garage keeping me from getting both cars in there.

Cars. So on July 1st, I am rolling down the road in my car, like you do, and find myself behind a large pickup truck. Now, as I am in a Civic, I can't see around said pickup truck, so when the person in front of him decides he suddenly has to turn left, doesn't use a signal, and just STOPS, I can't see that. Pickup truck mashes his brakes, I hit mine, and while he gets stopped in time, I do not. I hit him going like, 10 mph, tops. About the speed of a jogger. HIS car is fine. A scratch on the bumper, no more. Unfortunately, because my car is smaller, I miss hitting his bumper with mine and slide UNDER his car, so his bumper just pushes my hood back like an accordion, and has its way with my radiator, A/C condenser, framework, headlights, and so on. Its a mess. I get an estimate. Freakin' FOUR GRAND worth of damage! From hitting someone at 10 mph! Ridiculous. My car's only worth 2 grand, tops. So I donate the green machine, and get the crimson shadow. Its a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. Got a pretty good deal, price-wise, but the real bonus is the super warranty. Plus you know, new car smell. Its awesome. Trunk isn't as big as I'd like, but if that's the only thing, I'm ok with that.

I'm still pondering ideas for the library upstairs...its going to be awesome. If I manage to get a secret passage in there, it'll be tough not to tell anyone about it, though. Otherwise its just a 'passage'. :)

Looking forward to turning 33 this weekend, too. I get to have breakfast at McDonald's. Mmm...hotcakes and sausage...
